Hi. Hope all is well...
So, it probably took you about 3 seconds to figure out that I have never, ever, ever written a blog. Ever. Culturally and technologically speaking, I think I'm at about 1996 on a good day. Which, leads to limited but somewhat interesting skills. For example, I can make a fantastic mix tape. Yes. I said "tape."
It was right around 1996, however, that I got involved with Writing Center work -- as an undergraduate at first, then as a graduate student in a PhD program, and now as a director at a small liberal arts college. I love what I do. More on that later.
Over the next 6 months, I'll be writing about my sabbatical project. Mostly to myself, perhaps. Maybe to you? On tap: some summaries and questions about reading materials; reflections from the very cool interviews I'm doing as part of a series of small ethnographies and case studies; some rambles and tangles. And probably a bit about the rocknroll, too.
Tomorrow, I'll post a quick summary of the project(s), but for now this will do: I'm taking this time to read as much as I can about creative collaborations between writing centers (especially small writing centers -- ones that have to operate on punkrock/small scale budgets and resources) and individual classes (especially ones that introduce discipline-specific writing and research skills to students).
These programs have a range of descriptors: "fellows" programs, "associates programs," "course-embedded peer writing support," and on and on. I'm hoping to establish a pilot program at my own college, and then do some writing and thinking about how this program might support an already rich culture of writing on my campus.
If you've made it this far...then you're obviously avoiding work. Or, you're my mom. Hi, mom.
Soon.
scott
PS: Yes, comments are off...for now. And, if you know of other writing center directors (especially ones that house course-embedded writing tutoring programs), please pass along the link to this blog.
